Morocco Desert Tours: Private & Shared Tours to the Sahara

Every route to the dunes of Erg Chebbi, gathered in one place: private, small-group and shared Morocco desert tours from Marrakech, Fes, Casablanca and Tangier — planned and driven by local guides from Merzouga.

The Sahara is the reason most travellers come to Morocco. Not a postcard version of it, but the real thing: a sea of orange dunes at Merzouga, some rising 150 metres, that changes colour from rose to gold to deep amber as the day turns. You ride a camel in at sunset, eat dinner under a sky dense with stars, hear drums around a campfire, and wake before dawn to watch the light come back over the sand. It is the night almost every visitor remembers longest — and it starts with choosing the right desert tour.

We are Les Roches Desert Tours, a Morocco-based operator named for the black rocky desert — the roches — that frames the dunes where our guides grew up. We run 56 Morocco tours in total: the classic 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour, one-way crossings between Marrakech and Fes, grand tours from Casablanca and Tangier, and desert escapes from Errachidia, the airport closest to the dunes. Every tour is led by an English-speaking local driver-guide, every price is confirmed in writing before you commit, and our team answers on WhatsApp seven days a week.

Below you will find a short guide to choosing — your starting city, your travel style, your timeframe — followed by every tour we run, grouped by the city it departs from.

A Quick Guide

Finding Your Perfect Morocco Tour

Three decisions shape every great desert trip. Make them in this order and the right tour picks itself.

1

Choose Your Starting Point

Marrakech is the classic: the full Atlas-and-kasbahs road south. Fes is the shortest route to the dunes and the natural end (or start) of a one-way crossing. Casablanca suits grand tours from the main airport. Tangier begins the full north-to-south traverse for travellers arriving from Spain.

2

Decide: Private or Shared?

Private tours are just you, your driver-guide and your pace — stop for photos, linger at a kasbah, choose your camp level. Small-group tours (maximum 12) split the cost while keeping the vehicle comfortable. Shared tours are the budget classic: bigger group, fixed stops, same dunes at the end of the road.

3

Consider Your Timeframe

3–4 days: the Merzouga classics — Marrakech to the dunes and back, or the one-way crossing to Fes. 5–6 days: add medina days and a slower desert. 7–10 days: the grand tours — imperial cities, the blue north, the Sahara and the coast in one journey. Short on time? Fly to Errachidia and the desert is a 2-day escape.

Explore Our Tour Packages

All 56 tours, grouped by departure city. Every desert tour includes a sunset camel trek and a night in an Erg Chebbi camp; prices are per person and confirmed in writing before you book.

Tours from Marrakech

The classic starting point. From the Red City the road climbs the High Atlas to Ait Benhaddou, crosses the Dades and Todra valleys and reaches the Erg Chebbi dunes — with returns to Marrakech or one-way finishes in Fes.

Tours from Fes

From the world’s oldest medina, the road runs south through cedar forests and the palm ribbon of the Ziz Valley to Merzouga — the shortest big-city route to the dunes — and onwards, on the longer crossings, to Marrakech.

Tours from Casablanca

Flying into Morocco’s main airport? Begin with the Hassan II Mosque, then let the grand tours unfold in one continuous arc: Rabat, Chefchaouen, Fes, the Sahara and Marrakech.

Tours from Tangier

Arriving from Spain or starting in the north? Tangier opens the great southbound traverse: the blue lanes of Chefchaouen, ancient Fes, the dunes of Merzouga and — on the grand tours — Marrakech itself.

More Departures: Errachidia, Merzouga & Agadir

Errachidia is the closest airport to the dunes — perfect for short desert escapes. Merzouga village itself is the base for off-road days on the pistes, and Agadir opens the surf coast.

Why Book With Us

Why Choose Us for Your Morocco Desert Tour?

Licensed & Protected

We are a Morocco-based operator running our own tours, not reselling strangers. Your booking is confirmed in writing, your pickup is from your actual accommodation, and a real local team stands behind every departure.

Local Expert Guides

Our driver-guides come from the Merzouga region and the routes they drive. They know which dune ridge catches the last light, which kasbah café is worth the stop, and how the piste reads after wind — knowledge no itinerary PDF can give you.

Honest Value

The price we quote is the price you pay. Group sizes, camp standards and what is excluded are stated before you book — and if a cheaper format suits your trip better, we will tell you, even when it costs us a sale.

Support, 7 Days a Week

Message us on WhatsApp any day from 08:00 to 22:00 Morocco time and a member of the team — not a call centre — answers. On tour, that same line stays open for anything the road brings.

Morocco Desert Tours — Questions & Answers

The 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour is the classic: High Atlas, Ait Benhaddou, the Dades and Todra valleys, a sunset camel trek and a night in an Erg Chebbi camp. If your flights allow it, the one-way Marrakech to Fes version is even better — you see both great cities and never repeat a road.

Three days is the sensible minimum from Marrakech or between Marrakech and Fes. Four days adds a slower valley night or a second desert morning. From Errachidia — the closest airport to the dunes — a 2-day desert escape works well. Grand tours of 7 to 10 days combine the desert with all the imperial cities.

Private tours give you your own vehicle and driver-guide, your pace and your choice of hotels and camp. Small-group tours (maximum 12 travellers) share the vehicle but keep numbers low and comfort high. Shared tours are the budget classic: a larger group, fixed stops and the lowest price, with the same dunes and camp night at the end.

It depends on your flights. Marrakech is the most popular start and pairs the desert with the Red City. Fes is the closest big city to Merzouga and suits one-way crossings. Casablanca suits grand tours that begin at the main international airport, and Tangier is perfect if you arrive from Spain and want to travel the whole country southwards.

Pickup from your accommodation, air-conditioned transport, an English-speaking local driver-guide, hotel and desert camp nights as listed, dinners and breakfasts as listed, and the sunset camel trek. Lunches, drinks, entrance fees and tips are not included — everything is confirmed in writing before you book.

Yes. Every desert tour can swap the camel trek for a 4x4 transfer to the camp, and you can still walk up the dune ridge for sunset and sunrise. Just tell us when you book.
