8-Day Imperial Cities & Sahara Tour from Casablanca
Morocco's complete story: imperial cities, the blue city, the Sahara and Marrakech in one seamless 8-day journey.
First time in Morocco? With 57 tours across 6 departure cities, choosing can feel overwhelming. As the local team running these tours every week, here is our honest ranking of what first-timers should prioritize.
If you do one thing in Morocco, make it the desert. Our 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour is the classic: High Atlas, Dades Valley, camel trek at sunset, luxury camp under the stars. From €389.
The UNESCO kasbah from Game of Thrones. Our Ait Benhaddou day trip from Marrakech is the best single day trip in Morocco.
Marrakech or Fes medina with a licensed guide transforms confusion into discovery. Book a city tour for your first morning.
Add adrenaline: our 4x4 piste tour, buggy adventure, or KTM enduro ride in Merzouga.
Days 1-2: Marrakech. Days 3-5: 3-day desert tour. Days 6-7: Essaouira coast or Fes. Every highlight, no rushing.
If you have three days, spend them on one desert tour from Marrakech or between Marrakech and Fes — it is the single highest-value block of time in the country. If you have a week, add Fes and Chefchaouen. If you have ten days, do the grand loop and add the coast. First-timers often try to squeeze in everything and end up seeing Morocco through a windscreen; the tours that get remembered are the ones with a night in the desert, a guided medina day and at least one unscheduled afternoon.
Finally, book the desert for the middle of your trip, keep your last night in your departure city, and tell your operator about dietary needs and mobility before you book — Moroccan hospitality adapts brilliantly when it knows in advance.
Before you book with anyone — including us — ask five questions. What is the maximum group size, in writing? Are the camp bathrooms private at my price tier? Is pickup from my actual hotel or a meeting point? What exactly is excluded, in euros? And who do I message at 9pm if something changes? The answers tell you more about an operator than any rating.
Also ask about driving days honestly. A 2-day Marrakech to Merzouga return exists on paper; in reality it means two very long days for one evening in the dunes. Good operators will talk you out of it and into the 3-day or one-way version. That kind of honesty — losing a sale to save your trip — is the clearest signal you have found the right people. And when in doubt, give the trip one more day than your spreadsheet says: nobody comes home wishing they had seen less of the Sahara.
What is the single best tour for a first visit? For most first-timers it is the 3-day desert tour between Marrakech and Fes (in either direction): it combines mountains, kasbahs, valleys and the Sahara in one efficient arc, and connects the two great imperial cities without backtracking.
Private or group for a first trip? Choose private if your budget allows — flexibility matters most when everything is new. Small-group tours capped at 12 are the best-value middle ground, and shared tours suit social travellers on a tight budget.
How far ahead should first-timers book? Two to four weeks for the desert segment in spring and autumn, earlier for Christmas and Easter weeks. City day tours can usually be arranged a few days ahead.
Should first-timers visit in a group or independently? Independent travel works well for cities thanks to trains and petit taxis, but the desert rewards an organised tour: distances are long, pistes are unsigned, and camp logistics are far easier with a local team.
