Seven days is the perfect first trip to Morocco: enough for the Sahara desert, two imperial cities, and the blue city. Here is our recommended itinerary, refined over thousands of travelers.

Making the 7-day route work in practice

The secret to a good 7-day Morocco itinerary is the order of the pieces. Put the desert in the middle, not at the end: by day three you are rested from your arrival, and the long scenic drives become part of the holiday rather than a transfer you endure. Ending in Fes or Chefchaouen also means your last night is in a city with an airport or a fast train, which keeps departure day calm.

Driving times on this route are real, so build in margin. Marrakech to the Dades Valley takes about 6–7 hours with stops; Dades to Merzouga about 4–5; Merzouga to Fes about 7–8. On a private tour those stops stretch around you — mint tea in a kasbah, a walk in the Todra Gorges, photos above the Ziz Valley. On a shared tour the stops are fixed but well chosen, and the group energy usually becomes part of the fun. Either way, book the desert night for the middle of the week and keep the final day light: a medina tour in the morning and a slow afternoon is the perfect ending.

Booking the week without the stress

The easiest way to run this itinerary is to let one operator hold the whole thread: one booking covers the desert segment, the inter-city drives and the local guides, and one WhatsApp number solves problems if plans shift. Travellers who stitch the week together from separate day tours and trains spend a surprising amount of it in stations and negotiations. If you are booking pieces separately, lock the desert tour first — it is the segment that sells out — and build the city days around it.

Budget honestly for the gaps: lunches on tour days, entrance fees (small, usually a few euros per site), hammam and tips. Morocco rewards a little slack in both schedule and wallet. And keep one golden rule for a 7-day trip: never put a long drive and a flight on the same day. The mountains are beautiful, but they do not care about your check-in time.

Quick Answers

Can this 7-day itinerary start in Casablanca or Tangier? Yes. From Casablanca, begin with the Hassan II Mosque and Rabat before Fes; from Tangier, start with Chefchaouen and work south. The backbone — cities, mountains, Sahara — stays the same.

Is the pace rushed? It is full but not frantic: two travel-heavy days (into and out of the desert) are balanced by full city days. If you dislike early starts, run it privately and we will soften the timings.

What does a 7-day tour cost? It depends on format: shared and small-group desert segments keep the middle of the week affordable, while a fully private week with upgraded hotels costs more. Message us your dates for an exact quote.
