How to Get to Merzouga: Every Route to the Sahara, Explained

How to get to Merzouga: driving from Marrakech (560 km) or Fes (470 km), flying to Errachidia airport, buses, and why there is no train to the Sahara dunes.

How to Get to Merzouga: Every Route to the Sahara, Explained

The short answer

Merzouga has no airport and no train station, so how to get to Merzouga? You get there by road, and the only question is where you start. The closest airport is Errachidia (ERH), about 2 hours away by car. Most travellers come overland from Marrakech (about 560 km, roughly 9 hours of driving) or from Fes (about 470 km, roughly 7 to 8 hours). On an organised tour those drives are broken by a night in the Dades Valley and sightseeing stops, so they feel like part of the trip rather than a transfer.

From Marrakech: the classic road south

The Marrakech to Merzouga road is the most travelled desert route in Morocco, and for good reason: it crosses the Tizi n’Tichka pass in the High Atlas, passes the kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, runs through Ouarzazate and the Valley of Roses, and spends a night in the Dades Valley before the Todra Gorges and the dunes. Driving it yourself in one day is possible but punishing — about 9 hours behind the wheel. Public buses take around 12 hours. On our tours the journey is split across two days, which is why the classic format is 3 days, not 2.

From Fes: the shortest big-city route

Fes to Merzouga is the shortest link between a major city and the big dunes: about 470 km, roughly 7 to 8 hours with stops, through the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, Midelt and the long palm ribbon of the Ziz Valley. It is the reason the 3-day Fes to Merzouga tour works so well, and why the express 2-day version exists for travellers short on time.

Flying to Errachidia: the shortcut

Errachidia airport (ERH) is the closest airport to the dunes, about 2 hours from Merzouga village. Flights here are limited and not daily, so check schedules early — and have a backup plan. If Errachidia flights do not fit your dates, fly to Fes or Marrakech and travel overland, or ask us about a tour that starts in one city and ends in another. Our Errachidia departures — including the 2-day desert escape — start at the airport or your hotel.

From Casablanca or Tangier

There is no shortcut from the north or the west: Casablanca to Merzouga and Tangier to Merzouga are grand-tour distances, which is why they work best as multi-day journeys rather than dashes. The Casablanca route runs via Fes and the Ziz Valley; the Tangier route runs through Chefchaouen and Fes first. Both end the same way — a camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset — and both are worth every kilometre.

Can you get to Merzouga by train or bus?

There is no train to Merzouga, and no train station in the village — the rail network ends far to the north and west. Buses do reach Merzouga from Marrakech and Fes, but they are long (around 12 hours from Marrakech) and leave you to arrange the camp and camel trek yourself. For most travellers the organised tour is the better deal: transport, guide, hotels and camp in one booking, with pickup from your accommodation.

Which way should you choose?

Short on time? Fly to Errachidia and take the 2-day escape. Starting in Marrakech? Take the classic 3-day tour. Starting in Fes? Take the 3-day tour or the 2-day express. Arriving in Casablanca or Tangier? Build the desert into a grand tour. Whichever you choose, the last stretch is always the same: a paved road into Merzouga village, then a camel or a 4x4 into the dunes — and the Sahara does the rest.

Quick Answers

Can I get to Merzouga by train? No — there is no train to Merzouga. The nearest rail connections are far to the north and west; the final stretch is always by road.

Is the drive from Marrakech too long in one day? It is about 9 hours of driving, which is why our tours split it with a night in the Dades Valley. If you drive yourself, plan the same stop.

Do I need a 4x4 to reach Merzouga? No — the road into Merzouga village is paved. A 4x4 is only needed for piste adventures and some camp transfers, and those are arranged as part of your tour.
